About this event

Women remain substantially underrepresented in public spaces in many developing cities, yet the magnitude and determinants of these gender gaps are poorly understood. This project examines how neighbourhood-level public infrastructure shapes women?s spatial participation in Jakarta, Indonesia. I construct a panel of street-level human activity by manually coding Google Street View imagery from roughly 3,000 locations between 2013 and 2024, documenting that women constitute only about 22 percent of visible street users (adults) and identifying systematic patterns in where women appear. To extend spatial and temporal coverage, I am training machine-learning model to recognise gender across citywide imagery. Building on these data, I will exploit the staggered rollout of more than 300 RPTRA neighbourhood parks (2015?2017) and implement a difference-in-differences research design to estimate their effects on surrounding street participation. The project aims to assess whether such interventions shift local gendered equilibria by altering safety conditions, norms around women's visibility, and the structure of nearby economic activity.
