About this event

Democratic governments communicate with their voters both directly, via press releases and conferences, and indirectly, by authorizing leaks to media outlets which may then report to voters. We explain why these governments may use an indirect channel (aka authorized leak) and which outlets they leak to, in particular why they may leak to outlets which are ideologically misaligned. We use a related model to explain why these governments blanket classify documents, and show that readers may then learn more (via authorized leaks) than if documents were unclassified.
